Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the US. She has worked as a media critic since 1995. She founded Feminist Frequency, a site which features video and posts analyzing the portrayals of females in pop media. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular media. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she is well-known and has given talks at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. As a university student Sarkeesian was interested in the issues surrounding gender equality and the rights of women in the early stages. The ambitious young lady was harassed by the Internet for starting a web that focused on the gender of videogames. But the harassment did not discourage her. She was only able to strengthen her position as a feminist journalist. Her many notable contributions in the field of feminists are recognized with numerous awards.
