Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck) was an American actress and singer whose career spanned over 40 years. London, a torch singer known for her soft, soothing vocals and languid contralto voice, recorded more than thirty albums of standards and jazz between 1955-1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was the recording of "Cry Me a River" which she first introduced in her debut album. London was nominated in 1974 to the Golden Globe Award as a actress for her portrayal in Emergency The Adventures of Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her first professional job was acting as an actress as she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career started in the film industry in 1944 which included roles for female leads in several westerns. She co-starred with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) and with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) and together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). She signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the start of her professional music career. Her final studio album was released in 1969. Her success continued in the role of the female main character in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) and was a co-star with Bobby Troup. The show was directed by her ex-husband Jack Webb.
