Capshaw, whose portraiture has been displayed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Capshaw was born Kathleen Sue Nail in Fort Worth Texas. She is the daughter of Beverley Sue Simon (nee Simon), a beautician and travel agent and Edwin Leon Nail, an employee of the airline. At the age of five, she was years old when she relocated to St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from Hazelwood Senior High School. Capshaw received a degree in education from the University of Missouri, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. She was the Special Education teacher at Southern Boone High School Ashland, Missouri and Rock Bridge High School Columbia, Missouri.
